Without an active Enterprise license, updates for a Proxmox VE installation are initially unavailable. However, if you still want to update your Proxmox VE installation, you can use Proxmox’s “no-subscription” package sources.
Officially, Proxmox recommends these package sources only for test systems or systems not used in production, as the updates provided here are not tested as extensively as those in the Enterprise package sources.
From my personal experience (I have had no issues since Proxmox VE 6.x), these updates can generally be used without concern. However, it is still recommended to regularly back up your VMs, containers, and the server itself.
Updating Package Sources via the Web Interface
Since Proxmox VE 7, package sources can be modified directly via the web interface of the respective Proxmox VE server, eliminating the need to update them via the shell/terminal.
- Navigate to Datacenter => Server
- Go to Updates => Repositories
- First, disable the Enterprise package source
- Then, add the no-subscription package source
- Once the package sources are adjusted, refresh and apply updates.
TL;DR
- Datacenter => Server
- Updates => Repositories
- Disable Enterprise package source
- Add => No-Subscription package source
